2021 CHINA BEST CHAMPAGNE LIST AWARDS
Publication of the winners list
The “2021 CHINA BEST CHAMPAGNE LIST AWARDS” ceremony dinner was held on January 17th, 2022, at The Ritz-Carlton, Pudong, Shanghai. The competition that endured over three months finally ended. We shared this ultimate moment of the champagne industry in Greater China with professionals, sommeliers, champagne enthusiasts and media representatives from all over China in the run-up to the Chinese New Year!
Initiated by Ms. Lei Meng, the founder of Sparkling+ Asia, CHINA BEST CHAMPAGNE LIST AWARDS is the first wine list competition 100% focused on champagne in China. The professional jury is composed of the UDSF (Union de la Sommellerie Française) from the Champagne-Ardenne region.
This competition has several objectives:
– recognize China’s most qualified and professional champagne lists and sommeliers every year
– boost the Champagne market in Greater China
– enhance the Champagne service quality in Chinese-speaking area
– guide the catering professionals to understand and upgrade “Champagne wine” and “Champagne culture” knowledge
– encourage even more restaurants/hotels/bars to become renown addresses for champagne enthusiasts
More than 150 champagne lists from nearly 20 cities in Greater China participated with this 4th edition of the competition. The participating cities were not limited to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Xiamen, but also extended to Chongqing, Hangzhou, Hefei, Shenyang, and more.
In total, 47 professional jury prizes, 13 public jury prizes and 2 special prizes were awarded. The public jury prizes were voted online, the special prizes were selected by the special jury and the professional jury prizes were scored on January 3rd in Champagne by the UDSF (Union de la Sommellerie Française) of Champagne-Ardenne.
ABOUT THE PROFESSIONAL PRIZE JURY AND THE JUDGING CRITERIA
Eric Arnaud – Chair of jury
Chairman of the French Champagne-Ardenne Sommelier Union, Maître Sommelier of France, Mr. Arnaud has worked as a sommelier for more than 20 years and owns the restaurant ‘Le Concept’. He provides wine knowledge training and consulting services for many prestigious hospitality management schools and restaurants.

The judging criteria for the champagne list is developed jointly by the French Champagne-Ardenne Sommelier Union and Sparkling+ Asia. We assess the wine list from aspects including diversity, balance, quality, design, completeness of information, and bonus. It is worth noting that due to market differences, the price factor is excluded from the assessing criteria.

Special award for design
Criteria
An increasing number of catering establishments have been paying attention to the aesthetic design into their wine list. The new award of this edition invited the jury of design, aesthetic, and art professionals to evaluate the color palette, typography, text design, creativity, and expression of theme to select the best designed champagne list.

Special prize for food and wine pairing
Criteria
Apart from the aforementioned aesthetics, catering establishments also design their champagne lists considering the restaurant cuisine, in order to choose the corresponding category of champagne. The prize for the best food & wine pairing restaurant is awarded by a jury of food and wine experts. The criteria include sensory experience, diversity, creativity, and thematic expression of the food/wine pairing.

After nearly three months of registration and preparation, a week of public voting and professional judging, our awards ceremony dinner came to a perfect end.
